The Château-Musée de Nemours in the south of Seine-et-Marne is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its reopening. To mark the occasion, it is offering visitors the chance to travel back to the 12th century using an immersive process: virtual reality. This 2.0 tour is guided by Gauthier 1er de Villebéon (1125-1205), founder of the Château and the town of Nemours, and prime minister to two kings of France. This historical figure takes on the role of history’s narrator and takes visitors on a tour of what was once his home. This is an opportunity for the Château to see its founder reborn for the duration of a film. Visitors will be immersed in the life of the Château when it was still inhabited by its lord and his family, more than 800 years ago, and will be able to explore several of the interior spaces of this heritage site as they might have been in the Middle Ages, surrounded by the cries of the guards, the sounds of animals and ploughs – in short, the sounds of life at the time. Some of these areas have been closed to the public for security reasons since 2002, but will still be filmed: the gallery, the guard room and the vertiginous watchtower, towering 30 metres above the town.

With this immersive film, the Château-Musée is taking a bold step into the modern world, establishing itself as a historical and cultural heritage site capable of embracing the changes of our time and revitalising the services it offers its visitors. It is not only a fun and educational tool for visitors, but also a way for the Château-Musée to modernise and renew itself to its usual visitors and to attract a younger audience who is immersed in new technologies. To make a lasting impression, the system will be launched during the Fête de la Science and will be accessible to all kinds of visitors: French, foreign, adults, children, schoolchildren, and also people with reduced mobility, as the equipment will be completely mobile and can be used at the Pays de Nemours Tourist Office, whose structure is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
